A study found certain CBD strains could lower the chances of COVID-19 infection... But more research is needed.
While Hemp and CBD have been touted as wonder cures, the news that it might also help defend against COVID-19 is a welcomed surprise. No, smoking weed won't cure coronavirus, but there is a sliver of hope that hemp might help.
The jury is still out, but a Canadian study has recently found that certain enzymes in cannabis could help treat COVID-19. Researchers at the University of Lethbridge in Canada recently released results from a study that shows the benefits of CBD as an aid in blocking the cells that enter the body from the novel coronavirus.
New Study by Pathway RX
The study, published in peer journal Preprints, was conducted by the scientists in April. The results were released in a non-peer-reviewed, preclinical study titled "In Search of Preventative Strategies: Novel Anti-Inflammatory High-CBD Cannabis Sativa Extracts Modulate ACE2 Expression in COVID-19 Gateway Tissues" earlier this month, according to a release from pharmaceutical research company Pathway RX.
The study did find that certain cannabis extracts could potentially lower the number of cells that the virus could attach itself too. Still, it only dealt with CBD extracts used in medical applications - not any recreational marijuana use.
The Research
Using artificial human 3-D tissue models, they simulated and mapped out how each strain may impact COVID-19 infections in the human oral, airway, and intestinal tissues. Notably, they monitored each strain's ability to modulate ACE2 levels, an enzyme previously linked to COVID-19 infection.
The lead researcher, biological scientist Dr. Igor Kovalchuk stated some strains showed promising results in ensuring less fertile ground for the virus to take root. Some reduced the virus receptors by 73%. If peer-reviewed and more research are done on the subject, the study could be practiced in the form of mouth wash, gargle, inhalants, or gel caps, according to Kovalchuk.
Don't lose the mask and gloves, or stop social distancing...
Many businesses are profiting off COVID-19 fears with false claims of preventing, treating, or curing the virus. Authorities are taking measures to shut down inaccurate advertisements. Therefore, do not let anyone lead you to believe that hemp will ward off COVID-19, but do support the further study and research of such benefits because, at this point, it can't hurt to keep digging in the field of CBD.
While the scientists conduct the research, we have to wait and see, while enjoying Hemp and CBD products. That's all we really can do while trying our best to stay healthy and happy during these trying times. Keep in mind, hemp can still help in other ways, like easing the stress and anxiety that inevitably comes during a pandemic.
